The Universe: Chapter 0 – Introduction
My conceptual search for the elementary components of the universe already began during the last decade of the previous millennium. Popular science books such as Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time", Marie Gell-Mann's "The Quark and the Jaguar" and Yoav Ben-Dov's "Quantum Theory Reality and Mysteries", opened for me a gate to a magical world in which the hidden is greater than the visible.
Wikipedia defines physics as a "science that explores the most basic laws of nature as they are expressed in any observable system". The great physicist Richard F. Feynman wrote that physicists are required to answer the question "how nature works in a certain way? and cannot answer the question of why nature acts that way?" If I may add to that say, it seems that physicists also do not ask what it is? – What is Matter? What is Space? What is Time? What is Energy? And what is Information? – These are questions that are addressed to those involved in the field of Metaphysics, which is probably the correct definition of my series of articles about Universe. As mentioned above, physicists are trying to understand how nature works, theory and experiment becomes a scientific theory in form of mathematical equations. For physicists, mathematics is the language of science. This scientific language allows scientists to predict nature's behavior in the future.
In my series of articles called "The Universe" I will try to answer questions about the essence of the components from which nature is made, and questions like why does nature act one way or another? Hence, this series will deal mainly, almost without the use of mathematics, with ideas derived from my own understanding of the behavior of nature. My ideas try to clarify the essence of reality, the essence of objects, places and especially those of time and energy. These ideas were slowly crystalized into a solid insight at the beginning of the current millennium, during health walks around the neighborhood where I lived. The walks were mainly used by me to think about what was written in the popular science books I read and for the purpose of drawing my own conclusions.
One day, when I was trying to understand why the mathematical sign of time in the equation that describes the place of an entity in space/time is opposite to the mathematical signs of space, the insight hit me like a lightning (borrowed from an ancient giant – like Archimedes' Eureka), time is "a measure of delay". The insight will be described at length in the chapter on "Time". All my insights regarding the essence of the Universe were written down on notes, until after a while I gathered what was written in them into a booklet called "Thoughts on the Foundations of the Universe" which was published in 2012 by "Rimonim publishers". The series of articles called "The Universe", which will be published continuously, is actually a refreshing of what was said in that booklet.
