The Universe: Chapter 3 – Time (part a)
In many of the books and articles dealing with the question of Time, the philosopher and priest St. Augustine is quoted as saying: "What is Time? When no one asks me, I know, but when I want to explain it to the questioner, I don't know."
My own opinion of the essence of Time is at the heart of the series of articles "The Universe" and is the main reason for its publication. I am not a scientist, but my opinion on this matter, which is original, was formed after deep thinking and extensive study of the works of great scientists as published in popular scientific literature
History of understanding Time
Aristotle, one of the most important philosophers of the ancient world, and others in ancient Greece argued that Time is assembled of small portions of finite size – atoms of Time. He defined Time as "the numbering of motion in terms of early and late". In his opinion, Time is pulled by motion and both are continuous. Philosophers who followed him saw the continuity of Time as our optical error, since atomistic Time is discrete. This concept is very similar to my conception of Time as will be described below.
According to Wikipedia, Time is a philosophical-scientific-linguistic expression, describing the degree of continuity or the gap between two situations or events. Some distinguish between the Time set by a clock and psychological Time, according to which Time intervals are a function of an estimate derived from our senses. Regarding points in Time, some argue that this is a theoretical concept that does not exist in practice and is an illusion of consciousness. My opinion, as I will describe later on is purely materialistic.
Galileo Galilei, the founder of the modern scientific method, stated that Time is a quantitative magnitude independent of motion and exists even if there were no motion. This opinion is accepted today, but it is completely opposite in my opinion.
Isaac Newton, the father of the theory of Classical Mechanics and the Theory of Gravity that preceded the Theory of Relativity, argued that Time is a being that has absolute value independent of the measurer or measured. This theory collapsed of course, with the development of the Theory of Relativity.
The philosopher Immanuel Kant stated that Time is continuous, infinite and homogeneous. His opinion is accepted as correct and is built into Einstein's equations of the theory of General Relativity.
In contrast to Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, the father of the Theory of Relativity, stated that the magnitude of Time is not absolute. The relative velocity of a Moving Matter determines the Time it elapses. He rejected the concept of "simultaneous", established that Time is an equal dimension to the spatial dimensions, and bound them all together in a new entity: Space-Time.
Summarizing the various opinions, it seems that there is no clear and precise opinion about the essence of Time. Although there is a general consensus, based on General Relativity, that Time is one of the four dimensions in the Universe.
Essence of Time
My premise when I try to understand the essence of Time and how it is created, is that Space is material and discontinuously, or alternatively it can be named grainy.
Definition of Time to my understanding – Time is a measure of delay – Time is a dimension in the Universe that expresses the delay of the motion of Matter in Space-Time, by Space-Bodies.
A distinction must be made between Elapsed Time measured by a clock, and Timing which is a place (event) on the axis of motion of Matter in Space-Time.
Elapsed Time
Elapsed Time (later I will call it most often – Time) is a quantitative measurement by a clock, of doses of delay consumed because of motion of Matter among Space-Bodies. Different materials have different intensity of delay while meeting Space-Bodies, because they have different features such as size, density or geometric structure.
The definition of a single dose of delay is: the minimum possible Time during which a unit of Matter in the Universe is delayed by Space-Bodies. One delay-dose is the one that creates the minimum unit of Time in the Universe – which is Planck-Time whose magnitude is equal to 10 to the power of minus 43 seconds.
Since in my opinion Time is created due to delaying of Matter in motion by the Space-Bodies which are themselves discrete, Time itself is also divided into discrete doses (Discontinuity).
A mere quantitative measurement of Time by a clock will give a scalar solution, i.e., directionless. As mentioned, Time is the result of motion in Space, and since motion has direction, Time also has direction. This direction is precisely the opposite direction to the motion of Matter in Space. All this exactly according to Newton's third law, which states that every action has a response equal in intensity and opposite in direction. Hence Time is vector, it has a size and direction that change according to circumstances.
Timing
Timing is the place of Matter in Space-Time (or in common parlance "point in Time" or "hour"). This is the place of an "event" as defined by General Relativity. The absolute position is measured relative to the center of the Big Bang or the cosmic background radiation. When Matter is outside the Space-Bodies (in the process of moving from one to another) no Time is measured. In fact, the terms Time or Timing are meaningless outside these Space-Bodies.
Motion in Instant velocity among the Space-Bodies
The Theory of Relativity is based, among other things, on the premise that the maximum permissible and possible velocity in the Universe is the speed of light in vacuum. I do not dispute this assertion when it expresses the reality measured by us, and I certainly do not disagree with the equations of the theory of Relativity and the results that are remarkably accurate and consistent with the physical reality obtained from their solution. In my opinion, there is a more basic motion in nature that cannot be measured by humans, this is the motion of Matter in the Universe at an instant velocity (or alternatively infinite velocity). Meaning, the basic motion is actually moving from place A to place B without any Time elapsing – when there is no delay of motion by the Space-Bodies. This velocity actually exists only over extremely short spatial distances. In Space that is accessible and familiar to us, Matter in motion will always meet the Space-Bodies after passing a very small spatial distance and its velocity will therefore be defined and measurable.
